Hobbling Around Halifax
So there I am in Halifax. Surrounded by hundreds of years of history. Ubiquitous forts, colourful buildings, clean streets, unique parks…and so shortly after they were inundated with horrendous storms.
Last September, 2004, I was there for business. One of the buying groups our company belongs to have their annual meeting in a different Canadian city each year. But did I mention that Halifax is built on a verrrrry steep hill ???
When we last connected at Kawagama, I was limping from repeated abuse to the left knee. (My 2005 new years resolution is “NO MORE INJURIES !! I did have surgery on it in Dec. ) Well, a few weeks later I smashed the other knee on concrete – no, I was perfectly sober, believe it or not.) So, I was in constant pain whilst in Halifax.
On one day off between meetings I took advantage of a tour of the area. Very interesting – the driver even wore a kilt. At the end I decided to cruise the main drag ( meaning walk/hobble ) then catch the tour at Alexander Keith’s brewery. Which is at the bottom of this steep hill. I was in absolute agony when I got to the brewery. Sign said that the tour was 50 minutes – I decided that I couldn’t tolerate that. But I did go into their store. Bought 9 cans and the enclosed foamy. I asked the 2 very cute girls at the cash if they thought it was okay if I were to consume a beer or two down at the harbour. One sweety responds, “Do they allow you to drink in public where you come from ? ….Sir ?” Well I could 30 years ago.
Not heeding her advice, and in growing pain, I limped straight on to the bay. Where I found a path along the shore and several benches. Some of them well shaded ( ergo, protected from approaching walkers, bikers, etc. ) and provided a most welcome respite for this ol’ guy to get off his feet and enjoy a Keith’s.
For the next 2 hours I would hobble a few hundred yards and collapse onto a bench where I would consume another can of anesthesia. By the time I got back to my hotel, I was feeling pretty good ! And only 3 cans left.
